This week's tip

Pack your walk kit once and leave it by the door. The reason new owners forget poop bags or a water bottle isn't laziness — it's that they're assembling the kit fresh every single time. Build it once, hang it on a hook, grab and go. Walk friction drops to zero.

The checklist — 15 walk essentials

The daily four (never leave without these):

  1. Leash you trust — fixed length, not retractable, for training and busy streets

  2. Poop bags + a holder that clips to the leash

  3. Flat collar or harness with a current ID tag

  4. A few high-value treats in a pocket or pouch

The "makes life easier" six:
5. Treat pouch (so your pockets aren't disgusting)
6. Collapsible water bowl
7. Portable water bottle for hot days
8. A small towel or paw wipes for muddy returns
9. Reflective gear or a clip light for early or late walks
10. A spare bag or two stashed in the leash holder

The car and emergency five:
11. Backseat cover or hammock if you drive to walks
12. A second leash in the car (you'll lose one eventually)
13. Travel water and bowl that stays in the car
14. A mini first-aid pouch — vet wrap, tweezers, a few gauze pads
15. A laminated card with your vet's number and your dog's info

Three I'd actually buy

Some links below are affiliate links — if you buy through them I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only list gear I'd put on my own dog.

Treat pouch: [PetSafe — link coming] — the magnetic-close ones beat zipper ones; you can get a treat out one-handed while holding the leash.

Portable water bottle: [Lesotc — link coming] — squeeze-bottle design, the dog drinks straight from the spout, no bowl to balance. Skip the bulky hard-plastic ones.

Clip-on light: [Amazon — link coming] — under ten bucks, makes you visible to cars on dark walks. Easiest safety upgrade there is.

Worth knowing

If you're a brand-new owner, don't buy the harness first. Get the dog walking on a flat collar and leash for a couple weeks, see how they pull, then decide if you need a no-pull harness. Buying the harness before you know your dog's habits is how you end up with three the dog hates.

That's it for this week. Reply and tell me your dog's name — I read every one.
